Self build motorhome insurance can be known by many different names and categories and will vary in title from company to company. Some of the most popular and frequent category names you will see include; self build camper insurance, self build campervan insurance, DIY motorhome insurance and self build camper conversion insurance.

The most important thing to remember however; is that they all mean the same thing! Many leading caravan insurance providers will offer self build cover but some will vary with regards to stipulations, so make sure you understand your insurance package before making a purchase. The company insures your vehicle as a motorhome from the onset of the policy which therefore means there are no expensive engineer reports upon completion of the conversion, or complications when trying to amend the motorhome policy from a van to a self build conversion motorhome. As with anything however, there are guidelines in place and Shield stipulate the same factors as many other insurance providers.

For home converted vehicles, the company says that the conversion must be completed within 120 working days from the inception date of the motorhome insurance policy and have the following permanent fixtures and fittings: – At least one side window, wardrobes or cupboards, bed with a minimum length of 6 feet, permanent installation to house a water container, fixed gas or electric hob or microwave, a hor izontal sliding door or an outward opening rear/side door and a seating area for diners to sit round a detachable or fixed table.

It is also common practice for the insurer to ask for you to complete and sign a declaration form that states that you have converted the self build motorhome in line with the guidelines. You will also be required to send photographs as way of proof – of both the exterior and interior – as well as pictures that include the registration of the vehicle. It is also worthwhile noting that any commercial vehicle that is currently being converted should be covered at the purchase price until the conversion is completed. After this, you will then be required to advise what the new market value should be and provide receipts to support your declaration.
