Buying a motorhome isn't cheap and unfortunately purchasing adequate insurance for it once you have got it home is on the expensive side too. The initial cost involved will sometimes put people off buying insurance as they feel they will have spent enough on the vehicle in the first place, but this could prove to be one of the biggest mistakes of their life as you can guarantee that if you don't have adequate cover in place, something will go wrong and thousands of pounds will have been thrown down the drain.
Taking out motorhome insurance is vital, not only to protect your investment but for peace of mind too. Not being properly insured isn't worth thinking about as there is so much to go wrong. Motorhomes are expensive because they offer so much – they are not only a vehicle that allows you to travel around the world, they are also your home so you not only have to think of the mechanical cost if something goes wrong, you also have to be prepared for the financial burden of replacing furnishings and damaged items inside. As well as the extreme cost of owning and running a motorhome, you also have to calculate the amount that will be spent on general maintenance and gas. When all these factors are taken into account it really isn't worth the risk of not being insured.
The price you have to pay for motorhome insurance may not go down well originally but it is nothing to what you would have to pay out if anything went wrong and you weren't properly covered. As with anything that needs insuring whether it be a car or a house – don't take the risk. In general there are three types of motorhome insurance – third party only, third party fire and theft cover and comprehensive. Third party only covers liability for injuries to others as well as damage to their property, third party fire and theft is traditional third party cover and covers your prized possession against fire damage, theft and damage caused during an attempted theft and Comprehensive is exactly that – comprehensive. It covers all the main aspects of the third party fire and theft cover as well as providing assurances for your motorhome against at-fault damage.
Depending on which provider you opt for, there will be varying changes to your policy, however, things that would normally feature include; European cover, a courtesy car, new for old cover and vandalism cover as well as others. If there's one thing to remember before agreeing to any motorhome insurance policy however, make sure you know the ins and outs of the cover and know about any exclusions that are incorporated. Some exclusions that could be in place include; claims arising from your motorhome being used as a place of trade, and theft of contents unless there is a forced entry.
When it comes to making that all important decision as to which provider you should go with, try to look beyond the price. When it comes to insurance, price isn't everything as differing circumstances will always mean different figures and quotes. Also check if there are any discounts to be had such as deals for low mileage.
Finally, if you are not sure what the entire motorhome insurance sector covers, here are some of the different varieties that will be insured under a motorhome policy:
- American RV
- Camper van
- Van Conversion
There are also insurers who will insure other styles and types of large motorhomes but it is wise to check as some will exclude certain types and instead will only insure professionally built motorhomes as opposed to modified or self built alternatives.
