What is Motorbike Insurance?

Many people who go away in a caravan will also take a motorbike to get around on when they are at the campsite, but don’t want to take the car out. They may have a campervan, which is too large to drive around windy country lanes so a motorbike is ideal.

When you drive a motorbike in the UK, it’s a legal requirement to have motorbike insurance. It works in a similar way to car insurance, although on a different system. Therefore, no claims discount earned on a motorbike cannot be used for a car insurance quote and vice versa. You can however build up no claims discount on both motorbike insurance and car insurance at the same time, something you cannot do with two car insurance policies in the same customers name at the same time.

Why do I need motorbike insurance?

There are several reasons to take out motorbike insurance, including the fact it is a legal requirement of riding a motorbike in the UK. Whilst motorbikes may not be quite as expensive to buy new as cars, they are usually far more powerful, and move a lot quicker. The chances of having an accident on a motorbike are twenty times higher than when driving a car, despite motorcyclists making up one twentieth of road users.

Should you crash your motorbike, or be involved in an accident, your motorbike insurance policy will pay for both your bike to be repaired, and the vehicle that you have hit, if it was your fault, and there was another vehicle involved in the accident.

The motorbike insurance policy may also provide a courtesy bike for you to ride whilst yours is being repaired, and may pay for legal fees should there be a debate in court about the accident.

Can I get motorbike insurance for just a few weeks?

If like many people who take their motorbikes off with their caravan you only ride your bike when you are away, you can also buy motorbike insurance on a week by week basis. Should your bike be uninsured and declared off the road when it is not in use, your only worry is having it stolen, and many people insure their bike the whole year round just in case, as motorbike insurance is often far cheaper than car insurance.

If you are willing to take a risk, you can buy motorbike insurance as and when you need it and go on holiday.
